To "trash the dress"? or to preserve it?

I always found the idea of "trashing the dress" photography kind of interesting, if not macabre. For those of you who aren't in the know, trashing the dress means destroying the bridal gown after you wear it on the big day, by taking dramatic photos of some kind a la Shakespeare's Ophelia or a heavy-metal music video:

Hmm, even though I'll probably never wear my bridal gown again, I don't think I'd have the heart. What say you, ladies? To trash the dress, and have a fabulous photo shoot, or to preserve it? Married women, where is your gown currently residing? Leave your thoughts!

  1. As a photographer, I have to say that these examples are the extreme. Most times the "trash the dress" session (or I like to call it ROCK the dress) is a way to get pictures that you love in your dress without worrying about it staying pretty for the reception. For example, you really want photos of you and your new husband on the beach, but your wedding either isn't close to the beach or you don't want to worry about the sand/salt/ocean. You take the time to do another session at the beach where you aren't worried about who is going to see you in your dress afterwards. If I still fit in my wedding dress (now that it's almost 10 years later!), I would definitely do another session.

You also don't have to worry about time constraints and getting back to your guests when they are getting restless waiting for portraits to be done and the reception to start.

    Just my 2 cents!

  2. Thanks for your comments, Shelya! I agree that these examples are the extreme, I wanted to put it out there to see what kinds of thoughts people have. "Rocking the dress" in photos you love, such as on the beach, etc. are a different story and definitely appealing for all the reasons you mentioned. Your 2 cents are definitely appreciated! Brides, take note!

  3. I can't imagine trashing my dress- I still have the dress from my first marriage, I loved it so much! I want to keep it more for my daughter or nieces than just for my sake. I would have loved to wear my mom's hippie dress but it did not age well. So I want to keep that option for my kids :).
